The History of Basophils

What Basophils Actually Are

Modern laboratories instead use automated hematology analyzers, which pass thousands of individual blood cells through a narrow sensing channel one at a time, identifying basophils based on their distinctive size and internal granularity using laser light scattering or electrical impedance measurements. This automated approach, substantially refined through the 1980s and 1990s, can now accurately count basophils among millions of other circulating blood cells within just a few short seconds of automated testing.

Scientists Behind the Science

Paul Ehrlich's 1879 staining discovery remains the foundational achievement behind this biomarker, and his broader contributions to immunology later earned him a share of the 1908 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine alongside Russian scientist Élie Metchnikoff, recognizing decades of combined immunological research between the two scientists. Decades later, American inventor Wallace Coulter developed the Coulter principle in the early 1950s, a method for counting microscopic particles by detecting changes in electrical resistance as they pass one after another through a tiny aperture, which became the technological foundation for every automated blood cell counter used in laboratories around the entire world today, still bearing his name proudly to this very day.
