What Rheumatoid Factor Actually Is

Rheumatoid factor is an autoantibody, typically of the IgM class, that mistakenly targets a person's own perfectly normal IgG antibodies rather than recognizing any genuine foreign invader, a genuinely defining hallmark characteristic of autoimmune disease more broadly speaking. Modern clinical laboratories now instead use automated nephelometric or turbidimetric immunoassays, which measure how much light scatters or gets absorbed when rheumatoid factor binds to specific reagent particles suspended in solution, delivering precise, quantitative results within just a matter of minutes rather than the many hours the older agglutination method originally required of technicians. This considerable technological advance now allows laboratories to report rheumatoid factor as an exact numerical titer rather than merely the simple positive-or-negative result the original historical test could only ever provide.
